Privacy Policy

Belay ("we," "our," or "the app") is a pregnancy and postpartum companion app for partners. Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

What We Collect

Account information

• Email address (used for sign-in via email/password or Google)
• Your name and your partner's name
• Due date or birth date
• Baby's name (optional)
• Whether this is your first child

App usage data

• Pregnancy or postpartum week progress
• Waypoints you've explored (weekly content)
• Mental health check-in responses (Weather Check screening)
• Messages you send to The Ranger (our AI guide)
• Feedback you submit through the app
• Emergency contacts you save

Technical data

• Device type and operating system
• App version
• Push notification token (if you enable notifications)
• Anonymous usage analytics (screens viewed, features used)
• Crash reports (stack traces, device info — no personal content)

How We Use Your Data

• To run the app. Your profile, progress, and preferences power your personalized experience.
• To provide AI guidance. Messages you send to The Ranger are processed by our AI provider (Anthropic's Claude API) to generate responses. Your conversation history is stored so The Ranger can reference previous chats.
• To send notifications. If you opt in, we send weekly waypoint reminders, milestone celebrations, and Ranger briefings. You can control each type independently in Settings.
• To improve the app. We use anonymous, aggregated analytics (via PostHog) to understand which features are used and fix bugs. This data cannot identify you personally.
• To fix crashes. Crash reports (via Sentry) help us identify and resolve technical issues. These reports contain device and app state information but not your personal content.

What We Don't Do

• We do not sell your data to anyone. Ever.
• We do not share your personal information with advertisers.
• We do not use your data to train AI models. Your Ranger conversations are used only to generate responses for you in the moment.
• We do not collect your partner's health data through you. The app is for your use only.
• We do not profile you for marketing purposes.

Where Your Data Lives

Your data is stored securely on Supabase (cloud infrastructure hosted on AWS in the United States). Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Access to the database is restricted by row-level security policies, meaning you can only access your own data.

Some data (contraction sessions, mood check-ins, checklist progress) is also stored locally on your device so the app works when you don't have an internet connection.

We do not share your personal data with any services beyond what is necessary to operate the app as described above.

Sensitive Data

We understand that some data in Belay is particularly personal:

• Mental health check-ins (Weather Check) — Your mood screening responses are stored in your private account and on your device. They are never shared with third parties, employers, insurers, or anyone else. We do not use this data to make decisions about you.
• Contraction timing data — Stored locally on your device first, then synced to your cloud account when connected. We prioritize keeping this data safe, especially during labor when internet may be unreliable.
• AI conversations — What you tell The Ranger stays between you and The Ranger. We do not read your conversations. They are processed by Anthropic's Claude API solely to generate responses.

Your Rights

You can:

• Access your data — View your profile, conversations, check-in history, and checklist progress within the app.
• Update your data — Edit your name, partner's name, due date, baby's name, and other profile details in Settings at any time.
• Delete your account — Go to Settings > Delete Account. This permanently removes your profile, conversations, check-in history, checklist data, and all associated data from our servers. This action cannot be undone.
• Opt out of notifications — Disable any notification category individually in Settings, or turn off notifications entirely in your device settings.
• Opt out of analytics — Contact us and we will disable analytics tracking for your account.
• Request your data — Contact us to request a copy of all data we hold about you. We will respond within 30 days.

Data Retention

• Your data is retained as long as your account is active.
• When you delete your account, all personal data is permanently removed from our servers within 30 days.
• Local data on your device is cleared when you delete the app.
• Anonymous, aggregated analytics data (which cannot identify you) may be retained indefinitely.

Security

• All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS.
• Database access is controlled by row-level security (each user can only access their own data).
• AI API calls are rate-limited to prevent abuse.
• The Ranger AI has built-in safety guidelines and will direct you to emergency services (911, crisis hotlines) when appropriate.

Children's Privacy

Belay is designed for adults (partners and parents ages 18 and older). We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13 years of age. The baby-related data in the app (name, birth date) is provided by the parent, not the child. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it immediately.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or via email. The "last updated" date at the top always reflects the most recent revision.
